The undergraduate major in Legal Studies at NYU Abu Dhabi poses the broad philosophical, cultural, social, economic, historical, political, religious, and ethical questions that prove indispensable both to a deep understanding of law and to liberal arts education. Through this scholarly foundation, the undergraduate major aims to prepare our students for fruitful careers in law and law-related occupations. The integration of Legal Studies with liberal arts education enhances the opportunity for cross-disciplinary study. The Legal Studies program is situated within both the Arts and the Humanities and Social Sciences, and it thus serves as a natural bridge between these divisions. The Legal Studies curriculum design responds, in part, to the increasing globalization of law through a consideration of issues such as the environment, the rule of law, international business, law and media, human rights, technology and security, and law and ethics. At the same time, recognizing that law maintains a local focus, the curriculum treats the broad questions raised by globalization through the study of particular examples drawn from common law, continental law and other sundry legal systems. The curriculum aspires to nurture in students the analytic and communicative skills, the breadth and depth of intellect, and the international perspective and experience that leadership in our increasingly interconnected world requires; and to offer students diverse perspectives, both local and global, that reinforce their development into wise and effective advocates for just law, legal systems, and legal structures which remain the bedrock of individual and communal flourishing. Candidates should have completed a doctorate in law or a law-related discipline and have established a record of research interests. A strong candidate will also have academic expertise and professional experience in an international context that affords a diverse body of knowledge not exclusively limited to U.S. or Western-based law (common and civil law systems). Our students are drawn from around the world and surpass all traditional recruitment benchmarks, both US and global. Sensitivity to our highly diverse population of students at NYU Abu Dhabi counts as a prerequisite to this faculty appointment. The successful candidate will teach required and elective Legal Studies courses. The position is open rank depending on a candidate’s credentials and experience. Responsibilities include serving as an academic advisor for some BA Legal Studies majors; serving as a faculty advisor for student projects and interest groups; collaborations with faculty, instructors, and staff in ongoing program and curriculum development; and support for research endeavors.
